Beta-Reader Match-Making WINNERS!

Mon Aug 26, 2013, 9:41 AM
Words good. Make stories. But sometimes hard make stories.

That's where beta readers and editors come in. They're a writer's best friend--sometimes literally. Having an objective view over your writing can really save it, as we've seen here. Hopefully we've helped a few of you find your writing helpmates.

Thanks to everyone who entered, and double-thanks to everyone who poured their love and hard work into your partners' stories. neurotype, ValaSedai and I apologize for the length of time the judging process took. This was a very tricky type of competition to judge, requiring closer scrutiny than average! But it was worth it. Now on to the prize-giving!

Last (first draft)There is no one who truly knows how to face the end that lies beyond the end of the world. One day, the seven Moons shine beneath the Sea of Enkre, as they are supposed to, and the next day you find yourself drifting away, your world diminished to a mere fragment of what it used to be. You open your eyes in the light of the Moons and for a moment you forget about the cataclysm from the night before, or you think everything was just a bad dream. You look around at the alabaster walls around you, still intact, and you tell yourself all is as before. You tell yourself there was no Armageddon, no catastrophe, you tell yourself those galaxies, all those people in them, could not have perished. But then you walk outside and you see there are only six Moons. Time drifts by and people start speaking of strange things, of cities of fire standing on the edge of the Sea of Enkre, and cliffs of ice standing beside them, and you notice there are only five Moons left.
By the time you are down to you

Warnings: Violence, Non-canon character death
Author's Note: This is my (mostly) unedited first draft. The contest specified minimal editing, which was extremely difficult for me. While I don't think this is bad, it's not as refined as I'd normally post. In fact, there are two details which need work/editing. Hopefully, they're not as obvious to others as they are to me (since I'm super critical of my own work).
Smoke hung heavy over Praxus, obscuring optics and clogging vents. Check and Mate (First Draft)Shikamaru continued signing the after action reports, ignoring the loud music and the raucous laughter outside. Parties just weren’t his thing. Even a blowout to celebrate the end of the Fourth Great war.
Even after he had dismissed them, his squad mates had tried their best to convince him to join them in the festivities. Ino had practically danced back into the tent, her long blonde hair flowing behind her, giving him a forced, flirtatious wink. “Come with us Shikamaru!” she had teased, the smile beaming through her sorrow and loss. “The war’s over! We won! Surely we can forget the paperwork and live a little!”
Ino had been drowning in her grief. She desperately needed an escape from the reality of things dragging her down. The optimal solution had easily presented itself.
His response had been a simple shrug. “Parties are such a drag... Standing around talking to people you barely know and will likely never meet again... I’m fine, beli

Towering above the surrounding ruins, the smoking husk of the Assembly sat. Not so long ago, this building thrived, the center of all Praxian culture and business. Grand halls held concerts, games, presentations, assemblies, and exhibits, and all manner of art and technologies were gathered and displayed here. It was the heart of Praxus.
It had been the first Decepticon target in Praxus.
The Assembly still stood… mostly. One wing had entirely collapsed. Windows had long since shattered under the onslaught. From several of the gaping holes, smoke trickled out. But it still stood,

Nothing But TroubleThey both felt the impact as their practice swords collided. Receiving the blow was the younger of the pair; the taller youth delivered it. She was ready for his attack, though, and by bracing against the grass threw him off balance. Once his footing was unstable, it was a simple thing to push upward and bring him tumbling to the ground. He wasn't going to go down alone, and with a sweeping movement of his legs brought hers out from under her. For a moment, they both lay in the lush grass, enjoying a moment of rest after the past half hour of exertion. Her chest was still heaving when he sat up, recovered enough to laugh loudly.
“I've lost again. If the Academy ever decides to admit girls, I'm a goner. Hopefully the boys there aren't as tough as you!” In response to his jest she laughed half-heartedly, blinking her eyes at the brightness of the sky. Lady Rukia Kuchiki was small, even for the tender age of 11; her slender build and delicate arms attested to her noble birth.

Still the Same Girl (Revised)The Abyss was singing her to Its bedside tonight, unfolding black sheets into soft and smoky wisps. Let go, It hummed. You gave so much already. Come rest, Nami. There’s no sense in fighting it any longer.
A few steps away from Bell-mère's grave, Nami’s body stood in the moon’s pale and unflattering glow. Her mind, however, wandered elsewhere, opening fragile memories she swore she’d never touch again.
She drew in a sharp, cold breath and hung her head low. Nami was as worn as an old sail flapping limply on the high seas. Those fierce winds, once filling her with joy, now seeped through holes that had been torn through her spirit. Many had knifed Nami, but none so much as her sister. Nojiko’s last words weaved in and out of her head: “You're still the same girl.”
Nojiko.
She couldn't have been more wrong than a rock with an eye patch. That so-called “girl" had perished with her mother, Bell-mère.

Congrats to the winners!

And once it has more members, or even sooner, I have an idea for you for a contest theme kind of theme. And I can help! It involved Fan Fiction Poetry.
